FIN-419-AE (20/SP): Problems of Managerial Finance
Case Four – “Worldwide Paper Company”
After reading “Worldwide Paper Company” in the Bruner (2018) casebook, your task is to utilize
discounted cash flow and investment analysis skills to assess the relevant cash flows, cost of capital and net
present value of Worldwide Paper’s capital investment decision. As part of your assignment, you must
define the problem, get to the heart of the matter, make certain assumptions (i.e., when required to do so)
and incorporate relevant case data into your analysis; you must also reflect upon the implications of your
analysis. Please address (i.e., answer) the questions below, as you prepare your “case analysis” – i.e., the
report that each team will submit on Thursday, 23rd April. All case analyses must be submitted on time;
no reports will be accepted after the due date.
Primary questions
1. Identify and quantify the relevant cash flows for Worldwide Paper’s capital investment decision;
prepare a pro forma financial statement. Be sure to account for the effect of taxes and the amount
of initial investment.
2. Based on factual data presented in the case, estimate Worldwide Paper’s weighted-average cost of
capital. Be sure to clearly define the weights and component costs, as well as evaluate the
underlying assumptions.
3. What is the net present value and internal rate of return of the investment?
Secondary questions for consideration
1. How would you describe the nature of Worldwide Paper’s investment?
2. What are the sources of value – i.e., how does the project create expected value?
3. Considering inflation, what changes would you make to the base-case numbers associated with
your NPV analysis? How might those changes impact the expected cash flows (and NPV)?

Please note that quantitative analysis and other supporting documentation (when appropriate), should be included as
exhibits. Use of Microsoft Excel is expected for any quantitative analysis and one electronic file (per team) must be
submitted via email on the due date. References should be included at the end of the report, which must be typed,
double-spaced and not exceed 5 pages (excluding exhibits and references).
Your completed report will be due in class on Thursday, 23rd April, at which time, each team will present to the
class your findings, analysis of qualitative and quantitative issues, and overall recommendation(s) – i.e., based on
analytical reasoning and principles of corporate finance – as well as defend your position(s). Each team member
must participate in the presentation.
