SYG 1000 Sociological Perspectives w/ Carreno-Lukasik
Exam 3 Assignment
For your Exam 3 Assignment your paper must be typed, doublespaced, and a minimum of 1000
words. Please submit your paper as a Word doc via Canvas by the due date/time posted in
Canvas. Please note that no late papers or papers that do not meet the word requirement will be
accepted. In your paper I would like for you to please number and answer the following
questions:
1) a) In your own words, please summarize the main points of the documentary “The
Hunting Ground.”
b) Have your views about sexual assault in college been affected in any way? That is,
did you find any of the material surprising? Explain with specific examples.
2) For this question you will be exploring the issue of unearned privilege. Remember
privilege refers to unearned benefits, protections, etc. For example, I benefit from white
privilege in that I can teach a sociology class about race-ethnicity, and most students –
whether they agree or disagree with the material – most students will not see me as biased
or having some sort of agenda. If I were a racial-ethnic minority such as black, however,
some students would probably see me differently, as a black instructor who is angry
about inequality. As another example, I benefit from having the privilege of not being
disabled physically. Because I am able-bodied, when an elevator on the FAU campus
breaks down, I can simply walk up the stairs. However, if I had a disability and used a
wheelchair, I would not be able to access many of the FAU buildings if the elevator were
broken.
For this question you should consider various aspects of your social location – that is,
consider factors such as gender, gender identity, race-ethnicity, sexual orientation,
nativity (immigrant or native-born in US), social class, age, disability, and so on. You do
not have to address every single one of these; I am suggesting you consider a few for this
question.
a) In which ways do you benefit from unearned privilege? Give specific examples from
your life.
b) What are some specific ways you can give up some of your unearned privilege? Give
specific examples. Are you willing to give up some of your unearned privilege? Explain
why or why not. Thank you in advance for your willingness to look critically at your
own life.
